UK government launches £10 million fund for innovators

Can you create the next JustGiving or Freecycle?

The government has launched a £10 million fund to support new innovative technologies for increasing volunteering and charitable giving.

The Innovation in Giving Fund aims to discover and support the development of initiatives such as JustGiving, a website that allows people to sponsor friends online, and Freecycle, an online network that enables people to give away unwanted goods.

Nick Hurd, minister for civil society, said: “We want to root out the visionary ideas that too often never get the backing they need. We’re very open-minded about this, but ideas must have real potential to increase the giving of time or money.”

The innovation fund will be managed by NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts).

To apply for funding, people need to submit a short video elevator pitch with their application form. The best applicants will then be invited to present to a panel, which will then award the funds.

NESTA is interested in a range of ideas, but is particularly keen to hear about ideas that harness the potential of collaborative and networked technologies, including mobile applications and platforms.

Ideas that increase the number of people who donate to charity, or help businesses match pro bono work with demand, are also welcome.

The deadline for applications is 14 October and videos will be published publicly.
